“Lejos de casa” es un ejercicio de alteridad, una mirada sobre el otro -en este caso un amigo-, que ha iniciado un camino que cuestiona los lugares en los que nos encontrábamos. Se subtitula música person-specific, porque la persona es el espacio que funda el trabajo. Joan Izquierdo es el sustrato pero también la fuente en la que bucear mi voz entreverada. No existe la obra sin él, pero hay tensión, pues no existe tampoco sin mi perplejidad, sin el reconocimiento de esa alteridad con la que me une una relación de infinidad. “Lejos de casa” es, de algún modo, una anti-partitura; no hay código compartido, universalidad pretendida, a no ser que, de tanto descender al hueso, rocemos sin querer algún inconsciente colectivo.

Joan Izquierdo es un ciclista que fue flautista, alguien que ha cambiado la evanescencia del sonido por la herrumbre del camino, la escucha articulada y dirigida, por el oír abierto en la piedra, el horizonte y el pájaro. El trabajo no pretende alcanzarlo, la distancia es -debe ser- irreductible, sino emprender un proceso de extrañamiento que pueda apenas dialogar con el suyo.

“Far from Home” is a work about otherness: looking at someone else—in this case, a friend—who has taken a path that challenges the places we once shared. It is subtitled person-specific music because the person himself is the foundation of the piece. Joan Izquierdo is both the starting point and the main source of the work, the place where my own voice enters and overlaps with his. The piece cannot exist without him, but it also depends on my sense of uncertainty and on acknowledging the distance between us. That distance creates a tension that is essential to the work. In this sense, “Far from Home” functions as an anti-score: there is no shared system or universal language, unless repeated attempts to strip things down to their core accidentally touch something collective.

Joan Izquierdo is a cyclist who was once a flutist- someone who has traded the fleeting nature of sound for the physical wear of the road, and focused listening for a more open way of hearing shaped by stone, landscape, and birds. The goal of the work is not to reach or represent him fully- the distance between us is unavoidable- but to begin a process of estrangement that can, at most, enter into a loose dialogue with his own experience.
